One Bag Travel With Photo Gear

Travel

I think it’s safe to assume that most of us love to travel. However, I’m betting most of us don’t like packing, or even worse, traversing airports and navigating cities with a lot of luggage in tow. In fact, I’m willing to say that this is probably one of the main reasons why people dread the physical act of traveling – they just want to be there already!

Growing up, I always loved traveling by plane. So much so, that I yearned to be a pilot since I was seven years old. Fast forward twenty-five years, and you’ll see me smiling every time I set foot in an airport. Sure, my love for aviation helps me relax in this environment, but it also has to do with the fact that everything I need is neatly packed away in one bag on my back – and this includes my camera gear!

The way I can get away with only carrying one bag is due to my minimalist travel OCD and the Douchebag Hugger 30L backpack. I’ve learned to pack as light as possible from overpacking so many times in the past. The key is to keep it as simple and basic as possible (one pair of pants, one shirt, two tees, a few pairs of underwear and socks). When you think about it, that’s all you really need – or what I need anyway. This gives me plenty of options, considering I’ll also have the clothes I’m wearing on travel day.

By keeping the clothing down to a minimum, I am able to carry a considerable amount of gear that allows me to be completely mobile wherever I am:

  • Dopp kit/toiletry bag
  • Fuji X-Pro 1
  • Poler Stuff Camera Cooler (Fuji X-T1, Fuji XF 23mm f2, Fuji XF 35mm f2, Fuji XF 50mm f2, Fuji EF-X8 flash, battery charger, 4 batteries, SD card case, Manfrotto PIXI)
  • Peak Design Field Pouch (WD hard drive, MacBook charger, Apple mouse, iPad/iPhone charger, Zoom iQ6 stereo mic, business cards, Zeiss lens wipes)
  • Apple MacBook Pro 13″ (it’s seen better days, but it works like a champ!)
  • Apple iPad Mini 2

As you now know, my one large backpack holds many smaller bags inside. This helps me stay organized by keeping everything compartmentalized. I’ve tried many other photo bags and luggage in the past, but I truly feel that Douchebags nailed it with this bag that is now my favorite go-to!
